This 8-hour course will fulfill your pre-license education requirement for your Virginia Contractor Business License. It includes the requirements for Class A, B, and C of contractor licenses, and will prepare you for each section of the PSI exam, no matter which license class you are interested in obtaining. We will be using the 8th edition of the Virginia NASCLA Contractors Guide, which is included in the price of this course. The guide is referenced in the course, and it will also be useful to you outside of preparing for the exam.

This course covers the following topics:

  • Virginia-specific rules and regulations,
  • the creation and management of your contracting business, and
  • general information necessary for a contractor to know.

The Virginia regulations section includes both the rules from the Virginia Board for Contractors and the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code. Understanding the rules and regulations that govern contracting in Virginia will help keep you in compliance so that you can run a successful business.

There are many different facets of knowledge necessary to run a contracting business, and this information will take up a good chunk of the course. The management of a company is split into sections; for example, organizational and financial management are covered in separate sections to better understand each. Learning how to create and manage a well-run contracting business will lessen problems in the long run and give your company a good reputation, saving you both time and money.

General information includes the topics of estimating, bidding, contracts, and liens, among others. You may think this information is unnecessary, or that you already know and understand the contracting industry, but refreshing your memory will assist you in the PSI exam and your daily work. You may even learn something you didn't know before.

The final exam is split into three sections, as per the PSI exam. Those sections are broken into the Virginia portion, the general portion, and the advanced portion. The Virginia portion has 24 questions, the general portion consists of 52 questions, and the advanced portion asks 24 questions. Under the Virginia portion, you will be asked questions about the purpose and scope of the Virginia Board for Contractors, the process of contractor licensing in Virginia, and the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC). Both the general and advanced portion cover topics related to contractors in general, such as federal OSHA standards and equal opportunity employment laws. The exam should fully prepare you to take the PSI exam, and covers all the topics they have listed.
